Your challenge for today is here! As you know, this first week is Discover Week, all about finding new writers to love or learning new information about the writers you already know. Here’s your task:
The Challenge: Text (or talk to) a friend and ask them for the name of a writer they remember positively from childhood. Comment the name of the writer here, and I’ll count it toward our goal :)
I love chatting books with my friends (obviously), and it can be fun to find out what they were reading as kids. I was personally very obsessed with A Series of Unfortunate Events all through elementary and middle school, and Lemony Snicket was the one of the first authors I remember thinking about as a writer and person outside of just liking the books. I enjoyed the quirkiness of the writing itself, not just the story, and I was moved to learn more about him. This might’ve been the first time I learned about authors having pen names?
I’m sure you have a similar story. Share it with me, share it with your friends. Pass the write.
Shout out to
and for being the first two comments yesterday. We’ve got points on the board!!(The goal tracker is updated weekly on Sundays. If you haven’t yet, don’t forget to vote for the prize on this post!)
Comment, comment, comment!

Lobed this question into a group of library workers (my coworkers) and here are ones that reoccured: Katherine Paterson (specifically we had a long convo about Bridge to Terabithia), Gary Paulsen, Mary Pope Osborne, Erin Hunter, Kathryn Lasky, and the multitude of authors who write those Dear America and other such historical fiction diaries.
My friend recently watched the "Are You There God It's Me Margaret" movie with her daughters, so the group chat had Judy Blume top of mind! We're all big readers and there are a couple of us librarians in there so we could go on all day.
