Hey friends,
It’s hard to find words worth saying these days. None are really enough to ease the despair a lot of us are feeling. But I was revisiting some old writing recently and came across something I once shared for an MLK day event in 2017. Always feels pretty relevant. Here goes.
A change is gon come But where is it coming from? Cuz I feel like we been standing on the street corner with our hands out begging for change and aint nobody give us none Fought for the scraps a couple times but aint none of us really won And when they get tired of us beggin, they fold somethin up and slip it in our hands like a father on Christmas to his son open it up and it’s a one. What’s that gon’ buy? Besides our complacency and silencing our cries. We are living in a poverty where our hunger for justice is keeping us up at night but we keep telling ourselves a change is…. gon come but when is it coming and will Paul Revere warn us in advance? Imagine if Malcom X called for action, and received a town hall meeting where they danced around every question the only type of dancing that was never off beat Imagine if Fox news was in charge of justifying the murder of Rodney King Imagine Elizabeth Eckford live tweeting her desegregation of an all-white high school in 1960. Imagine what Martin Luthers “ebook from Birmingham jail” would’ve been like. I seems backwards, right? But the fact of these anachronisms is this is really happening here. so my Black history is unclear Modern activism of the same tired issues, our generation re-walks the paths we thought had already been tread holding hands out for thae burnt loaves of bread after everyone else has already been fed. Aint we tired of begging for change from people who clutch their hand bags and walk past with heads down Here’s what I know, now. We got us, we got community even after all the years of them trying to take away our beauty we still take it back we stand even tho they’re constantly trying to break our backs. We are strong enough come together as people who are tired of putting their hands out for change. aint nobody gona GIVE us none. but they can either sit and watch or stand with us cuz um a change is… gon come.
